“Hare trip to Havergate Island, a fantastic place to see hares is Havergate Island. The island is located near a small town on the Suffolk coastline called Orford Ness. The island is primarily an RSPB reserve for numerous bird species including avocets, barn owls, common tern, pintails & wheateater. The island is only accessible by boat, a small vessel with an outboard motor.
Havervate island is populated by a colony of Brown Hares that live amongst the gorse and grass and grass areas of the island.
I was lucky enough to visit the island and observe some of the wild brown hare population, the hares are quite tame as they have no natural predators on the island.
I visited the island in the month of March and watched some of the hares chasing each other. I was struck by how fast the hares could sprint, changing direction Incredibly rapidly. I also saw some boxing hares, that were fascinating to watch, hares box in the month of March, it is the female hares that box off the attention of the male hares in the hare mating season.
The brown hares were also incredibly well camouflaged amongst the dry grass, there flecked brown coats made sporting some of the hares a real challenge.
The trip provided much inspiration for future hare paintings.
