James Hollis the Artist
James Hollis was born in 1977 London England, formative years were spent living in London but with regular trips to the countryside and coast. A love of drawing and painting began from a young age and was nurtured and encouraged by the budding artist’s parents.
A keen interest in drawing wildlife and landscape led James to study a degree (BA) Hons in Landscape Architecture at the University of Greenwich and to also gain a diploma in Landscape Architecture, from the University of Essex.
Having worked successfully as a Landscape Architect for a number of years, many of James’s landscape designs have been realized. These range from small private gardens to large parks and public realm projects, including a number of award-winning designs.
A continued passion for drawing and painting was developed, and a love for the medium of watercolour begun, whilst continuing to work as a Landscape Architect.
James has also travelled extensively throughout North America, Europe, Japan, Asia and Australia, which has broadened his vision depth and range of subjects. The combination of specialised landscape knowledge and unique talent combined with a love of wildlife and the British countryside, aid in creating expressive, loose and atmospheric watercolour paintings.
James has sold many pieces located in private collections around the world. Work has also been exhibited in galleries, the famous Greenwich Market and has been featured as a two-time finalist in the BBC wildlife artist completion.
James continues to learn about all aspects of painting and drawing, striving to hone and further develop technique and push the boundaries of painting and art.
Paintings captivate with dynamic, fresh bold brushstrokes combined with atmospheric washes imbued with changing hues. The expressive interplay with these techniques creates mysterious paintings capturing light and the essence of the subject matter.
